Urogynecology involves pelvic floor disorders such as stress urinary incontinence or prolapse of the pelvic organs.
Pelvic floor disorders occur when the muscles of the pelvic floor are stretched and weakened due to childbirth, obesity, heavy lifting or high impact sports. This weakening of the pelvic floor can result in leakage of urine or fecal matter, pain, difficulty emptying the bladder or bowels, and pelvic organ prolapse (a condition where the bladder, uterus or rectum begins to “fall” into the vagina).
An increasing number of women are also seeking help for complications from vaginal mesh procedures, where the plastic net-like product used to help support the pelvic organs causes infection, erosion of vaginal tissue, or organ perforation.
