Mirena & Paraguard

Mirena is an FDA-approved intrauterine device (IUD) that prevents pregnancy for up to five years after insertion. A t-shaped plastic implant, Mirena works by thinning the lining of the uterus and also releasing the hormone progestin, which thickens the mucous lining of the cervix, preventing sperm from entering. Mirena also suppresses ovulation. Mirena is appropriate for use by all premenopausal women, including teenagers.

Paragard is a non-hormonal intrauterine device (IUD) that prevents pregnancy for up to 10 years after insertion. The t-shaped plastic implant is covered in copper wire, which slowly releases copper into the uterus. Copper produces an inflammatory effect on the uterus that is toxic to sperm. Paragard is appropriate for use by all premenopausal women, including teenagers.
